A key moment of the solemn proceedings occurred as the caisson—carrying the flag-draped casket and drawn by six grey horses with a riderless horse following behind—departed the North Portico of the White House to proceed down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the United States Capitol for public lying in state. The procession was attended by international dignitaries, military honor guards, and solemn crowds lining the streets of the capital.
