This stamp commemorates Leroy Gordon Cooper Jr., one of the original Mercury astronauts and a key figure in American space exploration. On 15 May 1963, Cooper flew aboard the Faith 7 spacecraft, completing the longest and most ambitious mission of the Mercury program. During the flight, he orbited the Earth multiple times and demonstrated that humans could function effectively in space for extended periods, providing valuable experience for future missions.

By issuing this stamp, Ras Al Khaima recognized an important achievement in the development of manned spaceflight. The issue celebrates the contributions of the astronauts whose pioneering missions expanded scientific knowledge and helped lay the foundations for the Gemini and Apollo programs that followed, ultimately leading to human exploration of the Moon.
