This stamp is part of a Ras Al Khaima series honoring the pioneers of the Space Age. It depicts Walter M. Schirra Jr., one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, together with a representation of the Sigma 7 spacecraft. On 3 October 1962, Schirra completed a highly successful orbital mission aboard Sigma 7, circling the Earth six times and demonstrating the reliability of both the astronaut and the spacecraft. The mission was regarded as an important step in refining operational procedures for future human spaceflight programs.

By issuing this stamp, Ras Al Khaima celebrated the rapid advances in space exploration that captured worldwide attention during the 1960s. The issue honors the astronauts whose pioneering missions expanded scientific knowledge and helped pave the way for more ambitious ventures, including the Gemini and Apollo programs, which ultimately led to human exploration of the Moon.
