This stamp commemorates Thomas P. Stafford, an American astronaut who flew aboard Gemini 6A, launched on 15 December 1965. Together with fellow astronaut Wally Schirra, Stafford participated in one of the most significant missions of the Gemini program. Gemini 6A successfully achieved the first controlled rendezvous between two manned spacecraft when it approached Gemini 7 in orbit, demonstrating a technique that would later become essential for lunar exploration and docking operations in space.

By issuing this stamp, Ras Al Khaima recognized a major milestone in the history of spaceflight. The issue celebrates the technological and scientific achievements that made orbital rendezvous possible and honors the astronauts whose missions helped pave the way for the Apollo program and the future exploration of the Moon and beyond.
