11th international scout jamboree, Athens- 4 naye paise
The 11th World Scout Jamboree was held in August 1963 in the historic plain of Marathon, Greece, about 26 miles from Athens. Attended by roughly 14,000 Scouts from 89 countries, it is famously remembered for its Olympic theme and its somber tribute to the Philippine delegation. The event was deeply marked by tragedy when 24 members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (20 Scouts and 4 scoutmasters) perished in a plane crash off the coast of Mumbai, India, on their way to the event. Flags were flown at half-mast, and a memorial service was held. The Philippines' memory is heavily honored in Quezon City, where streets and a roundabout (the 11th World Scout Jamboree Memorial Rotonda) were named in their honor.
