Issued in the 1960s as part of the Science, Transport and Telecommunications series of Sharjah & Dependencies, this stamp commemorates the NS Savannah, the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship. Launched as part of the United States' "Atoms for Peace" program, the vessel was designed to demonstrate the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the potential of nuclear propulsion for commercial maritime transportation. By featuring the Savannah, Sharjah & Dependencies highlighted one of the most innovative technological achievements of the twentieth century.
